Typically, in a multicast connection, the sender transmits information to all the receivers in the multicast group. Failures in transmission causes receivers to send retransmission requests to the sender. Due to high retransmission requests, the sender could become a potential hot-spot in the network. Also, receivers far away from the sender could experience high delays in receiving the retransmitted information. To prevent these and other issues, the notion of placing proxy (or repair) servers across the network was introduced, so that receivers could send their retransmission requests to the nearby proxy servers than to the source. In this context, we consider static placement of proxies on a network in which multicast requests (trees) are generated dynamically. The placement of proxies should be such that the proxies are utilized efficiently by the dynamically generated multicast trees. In this paper, we present three heuristics for efficient placement of proxies on any given network. We compare the performance of our heuristics with the best available heuristic KMPC, due to Lin and Yang, as well as the random proxy placement heuristic. Experiment results show that one of our heuristics, the NASPC, outperforms all the other heuristics with respect to all performance measures considered.

Placement of proxy-based multicast overlays
Proxy-based multicast is an approach to implementing the multicast function with proxy servers, which has many advantages compared to the IP multicast. When proxy locations are predetermined, many routing algorithms can be used to build a multicast overlay network. On the other hand, the problem of where to place proxies has not been extensively studied yet. A study on the placement problem for...

متن کاملSubgroup-based Source Recovery or Local Recovery for Reliable Multicasting
A traditional approach to design scalable reliable multicast algorithms is using proxies to recover lost packets. The proxies store the packets from the source and retransmit them to the requesting end receivers. Proxy placement in a multicast tree is a well-researched problem. However, given that the proxies require significant storage and processing resources, it is not possible to place them...
متن کاملCongestion Control Scheme for Reliable Multicast Improving Intra-Session Fairness with Network Support
In reliable multicast communications, data packets are disseminated to all receivers in a multicast group. Generally, end-to-end congestion control adjusts transmission rate of the sender to the node of the lowest throughput in a multicast group. In this situation, when a multicast group includes receivers of significantly low throughput, lots of receivers suffer throughput degradation due to e...
